One of the reasons why people buy a treadmill for their homes is that they want to get into better shape. All that may be well and good, but did you know that you can do a few things in order to improve your time exercising? You should remember that walking or running on this fitness machine for hours and hours is not the only way to gain that slimmer figure. Here are a few “tricks” to get the most out of your exercise regimen.

1. Advise your health care provider about the workouts you are doing, including your eating plan. This is especially true if you are currently taking medication(s) for any reason at all. Your doctor or nutritionist can give you very specific recommendations as to what you can and cannot do to improve your time on the treadmill.

2. Always wear the appropriate clothes. Nothing could hamper your workout progress more than wearing ill-fitting shoes and clothes, or gear that is not appropriate for working out. You should pay particular attention to the type of shoes and socks you wear because your feet sustain your entire body weight all the time you are briskly walking or running. And because the surface of the treadmill encourages movement, more weight is added to the soles of the feet with each step. Choose comfortable running shoes and thick socks in order to provide more support.

As for clothes, try to wear clothes that are light and will allow natural circulation of air. Clothes like these will allow the pores of your skin to “breathe” even under all that sweat.

3. Take a bottle of water with you when you walk or run. True enough, you are bound to lose bodily fluids when you sweat. And the more fluids you lose, the less efficient your muscles become, making you feel tired quickly. Instead of reaching for those sugar-loaded sports drinks, your best option would be to drink a bottle of plain, unflavored water. This “power” drink has absolutely no calories and can replenish your muscles faster than any of those sports drink available in the market.

Use all the exercise routines programed into your treadmill. At first, you'll probably want to stick with manual so you can control intensity, speed and angle (if your machine elevates). But your machine will most likely also have programs geared towards fat burning, endurance, strength and cardio. Vary your treadmill workouts and you'll get the most workout benefits.
